Of seven AI agents scored on eight criteria for automating account closures, My AskAI leads at 60/80 on cost and handover. Intercom Fin follows at 57, with a teammate approval step before an account closes.
Account closure requests can go wrong in two opposite ways. Close the wrong account and you've handed a stranger someone else's money or data; make leaving too hard and the customer complains, disputes the final bill or takes it further. Most of these requests are routine, and your team spends each one checking identity, reading the balance and explaining what happens next.
An account closure request is a customer asking to end their relationship with you for good, whether that's closing a bank or wallet account, ending a phone contract or shutting down a software workspace. It's different from a downgrade or a pause, and plenty of teams call it a cancellation request. For save offers and discounts, see our post on AI for subscription businesses.
I'm Mike, co-founder of My AskAI, which is one of the seven tools below.
I split a closure into the six jobs it takes and scored seven AI agents against them, using what each vendor publishes. Then I priced a month of 1,000 closure requests, next to what the same month costs your team with no AI at all. The closest example among our customers is RecruitCRM, where the AI answers from each customer's account details and a rule sends cancellation tickets to the team.
⚡
My AskAI tops the scoreboard, and on the assumptions in the worked example below, 1,000 closure requests cost about $487 a month on its Pro plan. Here's the kind of team each tool suits:
  • My AskAI (best for closures handled inside the helpdesk you already run) - Reads each customer's account, settles the balance and hands disputes to a person with a summary. Identity checks beyond your helpdesk's are Task steps you write.
  • Intercom Fin (best for a teammate sign-off before every closure) - Can be set up to email a one-time code and to wait for a teammate's approval before the account closes. Each closure it resolves is billed from $0.99.
  • Fini (best for fintech teams that want bank-style identity checks) - Step-up verification before sensitive actions, with every action logged. It prices per resolution ($0.89 on Growth) with no plan fee on the page, so a monthly total needs a sales call.
  • Sierra (best for large telecom and subscription brands) - Makes personalized save offers and handles cancellation requests through your billing system. It charges per outcome, such as a saved cancellation.
  • Ada (best for banks that want a documented sign-in check) - A sign-in step, with a greeting you set if sign-in fails. Account actions depend on API tools that may not be in every plan.
  • Zendesk AI agents (best for paying when the AI resolves a request) - Recognizes signed-in customers and calls actions your admins build. Billing is per automated resolution, on top of seats.
  • Decagon (best for enterprise closures that arrive by phone) - Voice authentication and call transfers with a summary, built with Decagon's team. Its site leads to a demo request, and Decagon says most customers pay per conversation.

What does automating account closures actually require?

⚡
TL;DR: A closure takes six jobs: confirm it's really the account holder, read the account as it stands, make one fair offer and accept the answer, settle what's owed, close it and explain what comes next, and pass hard cases to a person. Intercom Fin and Fini show five of the six in full, and My AskAI, Sierra and Zendesk AI agents show four.
I scored every tool against the six jobs below. When the AI can't do one of them, your customer or your team pays for it.
Six cards showing what an AI must get right on an account closure: confirms the account holder, reads the live account, makes one fair offer, settles what's owed, closes it and explains next, and hands hard cases to a person.
Six cards showing what an AI must get right on an account closure: confirms the account holder, reads the live account, makes one fair offer, settles what's owed, closes it and explains next, and hands hard cases to a person.

1. It checks it's really the account holder

A closure is the one request an impostor would most like to make, because it can cut a real customer off from their money, their phone number or their data. The AI has to confirm who it's talking to before it touches anything, using a check you already trust: a sign-in on your site or app, a one-time code, or details only the owner knows, compared against your records.
It also needs a plan for when the check fails. The AI should stop, tell the customer it can't go further in the chat, and pass the conversation to a person. Ask every vendor to show you that failure path in the demo, because it's the first thing your security reviewer will ask about (our guide to AI customer service security and compliance covers the rest of that review).

2. It can see the account as it stands

Before a customer agrees to close, they want to know what it will cost them. That depends on the live account: the balance, pending payments or deposits, the contract end date, equipment still out and the plan they're on.
One bank tells customers that every deposit and pending item has to post before most accounts can close, and one phone company tells them that any remaining device balance comes due on the final bill. I ranked this job second, right behind the identity check, because without it the AI can't tell a customer what they'll owe or lose by closing.

3. It makes one fair offer, then takes no for an answer

Plenty of businesses want a chance to keep the customer, and telecom help pages often invite customers to call before they cancel so the provider can review their options. That's fine inside rules you set: the AI makes the offer you configured, once, and if the customer still wants to leave, it goes ahead with the closure.
I scored this job on control: can you decide which customers get an offer, what the offer is, and whether the AI makes it once and then moves on?

4. It settles what's owed

The customer needs to know what they'll pay, or get back. The AI should work that out from the live account (the final bill, any early-exit fee or the refund of a remaining balance) and explain it in plain words. Then it should issue a refund within limits you set, or propose it for your team to approve.
Closures overlap with refunds and with AI that takes actions in your systems. Our roundups of AI for refunds and AI for action-taking cover the money side.

5. It closes the account and tells the customer what happens next

The closure has to happen in the system that holds the account. If the chat promises a closure that a person carries out days later, next month's bill can arrive before the account is closed.
The confirmation should then say what happens next: statements to download before they disappear from online banking, a final bill, a phone number moving to a new carrier, or a workspace and its data being deleted. Your team should also be able to see afterwards exactly what the AI did and why, step by step. I scored this job partly on whether that record exists, because you'll need it the first time a customer says they never asked to close.

6. It hands the hard cases to a person

Some closures should always reach a person: a disputed final bill, a bereavement, a customer in financial difficulty, or anything a regulator might care about. The AI should route those by topic rule, and a customer who asks for a person should get one, every time.
The handover should include a summary of the conversation so far, so the customer doesn't have to explain everything again to someone new. Our roundup of AI for human handoff covers the mechanics in more depth.

How did I score these tools for account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Eight criteria, each scored out of 10 for a total out of 80: the six closure jobs above, plus how much work setup takes and the monthly cost at 1,000 closure requests.
The scores come from each vendor's docs, product pages, pricing pages and published customer stories. Where a vendor's pages show part of a job, I've given credit for that part and marked the job as partial.
The eight criteria, in priority order:
  • Checks who is asking - confirms the account holder before acting, and hands over when it can't
  • Sees the customer's account - reads live details such as the balance, contract and pending items
  • One fair retention offer - follows offer rules you set, and the customer can still leave
  • Settles the final balance - works out and explains the final bill or refund, and pays it out within limits
  • Closes it and keeps a record - closes the account where it's held, confirms it and shows your team what was done
  • Hands hard cases to a person - routes disputes and vulnerable customers by rule, with a summary, and a person is always one request away
  • Setup effort - the time and people needed to go live, assuming your team uses AI to draft and test the closure flow
  • Monthly cost at 1,000 closure requests - the lowest plan that covers that volume, billed monthly

My AskAI leads on the total because it scores highest on handing hard cases to a person (9), settling the final balance (8) and monthly cost (9). It scores 6 on checking who is asking: beyond the customer your helpdesk has already verified, the checks are Task steps you write, while Ada, Fini, Sierra and Decagon each document a dedicated verification step. It also scores 6 on the retention offer, level with Fin, since the offer is a step you build into the closure Task.
Intercom Fin is a close second on 57, with documented steps for an identity code, a teammate's approval and closing the account in your billing system. It drops points on cost because every finished closure adds to the bill. Fini (52) and Sierra (50) are strong on account actions, and Fini costs far more.
I gave Ada an 8 on identity checks, level with Fini, for the clearest documented sign-in step in the set.

Where does account closure automation go wrong?

⚡
TL;DR: Closure automation fails when the AI closes an account for someone who isn't the owner, when the customer can't get out, or when the chat says the account is closed and the bill keeps coming.
Here are the three to test for in a demo.

Failure mode 1: It closes the account for the wrong person

An AI that takes a name and an email address at face value hands an impostor the easiest request there is. A helpdesk vendor's setup guide warns that without enforced customer authentication, someone can impersonate your customers and reach their data.
Large consumer platforms confirm it's really the owner before they close anything. I expect an AI agent to do the same in a chat, before it changes anything.

Failure mode 2: The customer can't get out

The offer repeats, the AI won't accept a second no, or the customer can't find a way to a person. It's worst for the customer closing an account after a bereavement or because money is tight. A support lead in a thread on how far to trust AI agents put the line in a sensible place:
"Billing disputes, cancellations or policy exceptions should have clear limits and an easy handoff to a person"
I think a person should always be easy to reach, and whoever picks up the conversation should get a summary of it. A closure conversation should go to your team when:
  • the customer asks for a person
  • the AI can't answer
  • the customer sounds frustrated
  • the topic is one your team handles, such as a dispute or a bereavement

Failure mode 3: The account stays open after the AI says it's closed

The AI confirms the closure, nothing changes in the billing or banking system, and next month's bill arrives anyway. The customer comes back angrier than before, and the fix now involves a refund as well as the closure.
US consumer finance guidance says state law generally requires a bank or credit union to close an account in a reasonable amount of time after the request. Test for a close that happens in the system that holds the account, a confirmation that says what happens next, and a record your team can check afterwards.
Three ways account-closure automation fails: closing the account for the wrong person, the customer unable to get out, and the account staying open after the AI says it's closed.

Can My AskAI automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: My AskAI handles a closure inside the helpdesk you already run, covering 4 of the 6 jobs fully and 2 in part. It's strongest on reading the live account, settling the balance and routing hard cases to a person, and 1,000 closure requests cost about $487 a month on Pro.
We built My AskAI to work inside the helpdesk your team already uses: Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Freshchat, Gorgias or HubSpot. It installs as an app in each of them, so your team keeps its inbox, tags and routing, and closure requests are handled in the same place as every other ticket.

How does My AskAI handle an account closure end to end?

A closure is handled by a Task, a multi-step workflow you describe in plain language. The AI picks the closure Task when a customer asks to close, asks the questions you've set, checks their answers against your systems through Tools, and confirms each step with the customer. Our Task library includes an account-deletion example that starts by confirming the person asking is the account holder.
Video preview
AI Agent Tasks & Tools (Refunds, Orders)
Once you connect your systems, our User Data feature can give the AI the customer's live plan and billing details. It shares those details with customers your helpdesk has verified, such as the sender of an email ticket or a signed-in chat user. Any further identity check is a step you write into the Task, and a failed check hands the conversation to your team. I scored us 6 on checking who is asking and 8 on seeing the account.
The offer is a step you write into the Task too, such as one discount for customers on an annual contract, so we score 6 on the retention offer. For the money, the Task can work out a final bill or a prorated credit from the live account and issue a refund through your payments platform. Each action can happen automatically or wait for a teammate to approve it (you choose per action), so settling the balance scores 8.
Tools can close the account in your systems, and the AI then tells the customer what happens next. Afterwards your team can ask Echo, the assistant in our dashboard, why the AI took an action or handed over, including the knowledge, user data and guidance it used. Inspect & Logs shows the same detail for any conversation. Closing the account and keeping a record scores 8.
Hard cases go to a person through Guidance, where you write handover rules in plain language, such as sending any mention of a dispute or a bereavement to your team. The AI also hands over when a customer asks for a person, when it can't answer, or when the customer sounds frustrated. Before it hands over it writes a summary, a data-collection Task can gather what your team needs, and the AI then stays out of the ticket until your team hands it back. That earns us a 9 on handover, the highest in the set.
Setup effort scores 6, because connecting Tools to your billing or account system usually needs a developer. Writing the Task is quick if you paste your closure process into an AI tool and have it drafted as steps. You can also run everything in internal-note mode first, where the AI drafts each closure reply for your team to read before any customer sees one.

Who's using My AskAI for account closures?

RecruitCRM, an all-in-one SaaS platform for recruitment agencies, runs its support in Intercom and connected live user data to our AI. The team uses Guidance to hand upgrade and cancellation tickets to a person, and it reaches a 68% AI resolution rate. Here's how our case study with them describes what the AI can now see:
"It now knows what plan a user is on, what recent transactions they might have made or events in their account."
A digital-goods marketplace, also on Intercom, uses a named Task for each common account problem, including an account blocked by a verification check, and its twelve live Tasks cover at least 68% of its tickets. Where a person has to act, the Task gathers what the team needs and hands over. A closure Task uses the same pieces: the AI reading the live account, Tasks that act on it, and a handover to your team.

What does My AskAI cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Pro is $199 a month with 1,000 credits included, then $0.12 a credit, and it covers up to 5,000 tickets a month. I've assumed 60% of closures arrive by chat and 40% by email, that a chat closure takes six AI replies (3 credits) and that an email closure takes a first reply and two follow-ups (2 credits). That comes to 2,600 credits for 1,000 closures: $199 plus 1,600 extra credits at $0.12, or $391 before Task steps.
Tasks are billed at $0.02 a step on top, and counting every AI reply in a closure as a Task step adds 4,800 steps, or $96. That puts 1,000 closures at about $487 a month, roughly $0.49 each, so cost scores 9. The price per closure request is the same whether the AI finishes it or hands it over. Our 30-day trial unlocks every feature with no card, so you can prove it on real closure requests before you pay.
✅
Choose My AskAI for account closures if:
  • Your team works in Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Freshchat, Gorgias or HubSpot and wants closures handled there.
  • You want to decide, action by action, whether the AI closes and refunds automatically or waits for approval.
  • You want a predictable cost per closure request.
❌
Don't choose My AskAI for account closures if:
  • Most of your closure requests come by phone and you want the AI to take the calls.
  • You want the vendor's team to design and build the whole closure flow for you.

Can Intercom Fin automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Fin covers 5 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 1 in part, with an emailed one-time code, a teammate approval step and the ability to cancel in your billing system. Outcomes are billed from $0.99, so 1,000 closure requests that all end in an outcome cost about $990 a month, plus Intercom seats if you use Fin on Intercom's helpdesk.
Fin is Intercom's AI agent, and the closure features below are all set up inside Intercom. It has the most complete documented closure chain in this set, from checking who the customer is to a person signing off before the account closes.
The Intercom homepage hero, titled 'A complete system for human and AI customer service', with 'Start free trial' and 'View demo' buttons.
The Intercom homepage hero, titled 'A complete system for human and AI customer service', with 'Start free trial' and 'View demo' buttons.

How does Intercom Fin handle an account closure end to end?

Closures are built as Procedures (Fin's name for its multi-step workflows), and Intercom's guide to building them includes a "Cancel or pause a subscription" template. Before Fin reads or changes anything in your systems, it can email the customer a six-digit code, and after three wrong attempts the lookup fails. I gave that a 7 on checking who is asking, one below the tools that document a fuller verification step.
Data connectors give Fin the customer's live account and subscription status, and they can act too, such as canceling a subscription in an external system. That's 8 on seeing the account and 8 on closing it.
For closures, Fin's teammate approval step is the part I like most. A Procedure can pause until a person approves, and Intercom names account closures and data deletion among the compliance-sensitive requests that can need that sign-off. The decision is recorded, and the same step covers refund approvals, so settling the final balance scores 7.
On retention, the cancel-or-pause template is a starting point, and Intercom's guides describe conditions without a setting that limits a customer to one offer, so the offer scores 6. Hard cases go through escalation rules and guidance, including a rule for when a customer clearly asks for a human, so the handover scores 8. Setup scores 6, because the data connectors call systems your team has to prepare for Fin.

Who's using Intercom Fin for account closures?

Rocket Money, a fintech app, rolled Fin out on workflows it could scope and control (billing management and account access requests among them). Fundrise, an investment platform, is another fintech customer. Both are finance teams trusting Fin with account questions, and neither story covers closures in particular.

What does Intercom Fin cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Fin's pricing page lists $0.99 per outcome, and Intercom's outcomes guide counts a Procedure that ends in a handoff you've configured as billable too, while a handover because the customer asks for a person or sounds frustrated isn't billed. If every closure request ends in a finished closure or a configured handoff, 1,000 of them cost $990 a month, on top of the Intercom seats your team already pays for. Cost scores 7: the rate is published and self-serve, and the bill rises with every closure Fin finishes.
✅
Choose Intercom Fin for account closures if:
  • You want a teammate to sign off each closure before it happens.
  • You want an emailed one-time code before the AI touches an account.
  • You're comfortable paying per outcome as Fin finishes more closures.
❌
Don't choose Intercom Fin for account closures if:
  • You want a cost per closure request that stays the same whether the AI finishes it or hands it over.

Can Fini automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Fini is built for fintech and covers 5 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 1 in part, with step-up identity checks and a log of every action. It prices per resolution, $0.89 on Growth, with no plan fee shown, so a monthly total needs a sales quote.
Fini is an AI agent aimed at fintech and other regulated support teams. Its finance page is written around most of the closure jobs, from identity checks to escalation with the full context.

How does Fini handle an account closure end to end?

Fini's finance page promises to "Step up to KYC-grade verification before any sensitive action, every single time" (KYC is the identity check a bank runs when you open an account). At Atlas, a fintech customer, each sensitive request starts with an identity check and any mismatch goes to human review. I scored that 8 on checking who is asking.
Fini's docs describe customer data pulled fresh for every message, and its actions guide walks through canceling a customer's subscription in your billing system, with the refund amount and the date it takes effect sent back to the conversation. Every action is logged with the data pulled, the policy applied and the step taken, so seeing the account and closing it both score 8. Settling the balance scores 7, with refunds handled within policy.
The retention offer scores 5: Atlas's story describes renewal offers worked out per customer, and Fini's pages describe no setting that limits a customer to one offer. Hard cases escalate to a person with the full context (7). Setup scores 6: Fini says teams are "Live in 14 days, fully autonomous in 30," and each action has to be connected to your systems.

Who's using Fini for account closures?

Atlas uses Fini across its key fintech support journeys, with an identity check before any account change. Wefunder, an investment platform, is another published Fini customer.

What does Fini cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Fini's pricing page shows $0.89 per resolved ticket on Growth and an allowance of at least 2,000 resolved tickets a month, but no plan fee, so there's no cost per closure to quote before a sales call. Fini doesn't charge for escalations to your team (useful if a lot of your closures end with a person). Cost scores 3, because the monthly bill can't be checked from the page.
✅
Choose Fini for account closures if:
  • You're a fintech team that wants bank-style identity checks before any account change.
  • You want every action logged with the data and policy behind it.
  • You're ready to ask for a quote, since Fini shows no plan fee on its pricing page.
❌
Don't choose Fini for account closures if:
  • You handle a few hundred closures a month and want a price that scales down with you.

Can Sierra automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Sierra covers 4 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 2 in part. It's the strongest here on retention, with personalized save offers. It charges per outcome, which can include a saved cancellation.
Sierra builds AI agents for large consumer brands, with telecom, media and fintech customers. It's a separate agent platform that connects to your CRM and billing systems during a build with Sierra's team.

How does Sierra handle an account closure end to end?

Sierra's telecom page lists cancellation requests among the jobs its agents handle. It also says its agents connect to "your CRM, billing platform, and other key systems." Its payments guide describes confirming a customer's identity before activating a replacement card, and at Singtel the agent verifies customers' details. I scored that 7 on checking who is asking, since none of these pages shows what happens when a check fails, and 8 on seeing the account.
On the retention offer, a demo of a cancellation save shows Sierra's agent keeping a customer subscribed with a personalized save offer, and Sierra's Insights lets you experiment with variations of the agent's behavior. That earns a 7, the best retention score in the set, and it stays at 7 because Sierra's pages show no limit of one offer per customer.
Insights also shows the reasoning behind every agent action, including the systems it accessed, so closing and keeping a record scores 8. Handoffs come with a detailed summary (8). I held settling the balance at 6: Sierra covers payments, adjustments and disputes, but its pages show no refund limits. Setup scores 4: Singtel went live in under 10 weeks with Sierra's team.

Who's using Sierra for account closures?

SiriusXM, Singtel, SoFi and Chime are published Sierra customers across media, telecom and fintech. None of their stories covers closures.

What does Sierra cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Sierra's post on outcome-based pricing ties billing to outcomes "such as a resolved support conversation, a saved cancellation, an upsell, a cross-sell," so a customer the agent talks out of closing can be a billable outcome. The post gives no rates and invites you to talk to Sierra about pricing, so cost scores 2.
✅
Choose Sierra for account closures if:
  • You're a large telecom, media or subscription brand with budget for a build led by the vendor.
  • You want the AI to make a personalized save offer before a customer leaves.
  • You want the same agent to answer phone calls.
❌
Don't choose Sierra for account closures if:
  • You want to see a price before you talk to Sierra.
  • You want your team to set it up and change it without the vendor.

Can Ada automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Ada has the clearest documented sign-in check here, and covers 3 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 3 in part. Pricing starts with a demo request, and account actions depend on API tools that may not be in every plan.
Ada is an enterprise AI agent platform with fintech and telecom customers and voice support. Its integrations page lists Zendesk, Salesforce, Gorgias and the Freshworks suite among the helpdesks it works with, and no Intercom or HubSpot connector.

How does Ada handle an account closure end to end?

Ada's Sign In block is the clearest identity check in this set. In Ada's words, "Sign-in confirms the customer is the person they claim to be, which should happen before your AI Agent shares any sensitive data," and if sign-in fails the agent sends a greeting you set. I gave Ada an 8, level with Fini, because its docs don't show that greeting passing the customer to a person.
API tools let the agent retrieve balances, subscription details or usage data from your systems (8 on seeing the account), and they can update those systems too. Ada's docs note that the feature may not be included with every subscription, so settling the balance and closing the account score 6 each. Retention offers are written as general instructions to the agent, with no dedicated offer step, so the retention offer scores 5.
Handoffs are set by rules, and you can have up to five active at a time. Summaries come with handoffs to Zendesk Live Chat, Zendesk Ticketing, Salesforce Live Chat and email, so the handover scores 7. Setup scores 5, since API tools have to be connected to your systems.

Who's using Ada for account closures?

Brigit (a fintech app with 7 million users) is a published Ada customer in financial services. Its story covers support at scale, with no closure-specific detail.

What does Ada cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Ada's pricing page leads to a demo request, and third-party pricing data says quotes are based on conversation volume. Ada's page gives no rate to plan a budget around, so cost scores 2.
✅
Choose Ada for account closures if:
  • You're a bank or fintech that wants a documented sign-in check before any account detail is shared.
  • Your closures come by phone as well as chat, and you want one agent for both.
  • You have an enterprise budget and a rollout led by the vendor suits you.
❌
Don't choose Ada for account closures if:
  • You run support in Intercom or HubSpot.
  • You want a listed price rather than a demo request.

Can Zendesk AI agents automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Zendesk AI agents cover 4 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 2 in part, recognizing signed-in customers and calling actions your admins build. They're included in every Suite and Support plan and billed per automated resolution, on top of seats.
Zendesk AI agents are the AI built into Zendesk, so a team already on Zendesk can switch them on without adding a vendor.

How does Zendesk handle an account closure end to end?

Zendesk leans on your site or app sign-in to know who it's talking to. When a customer is verified with Zendesk, the AI agent stops asking for their name and email, and Zendesk's help articles describe no separate code step inside the conversation. Checking who is asking scores 5, the lowest in the set.
Custom actions let the AI agent read and update data outside Zendesk (7 on seeing the account). Flows your admins build can settle a balance or close an account when the AI agent calls them (6 on settling, 7 on closing). Conversation logs show each message and action for the record.
For handover, you design the escalation flows, and Zendesk also lets you remove every escalation option. For closures, keep a route to a person switched on (a customer who can't reach anyone is how a routine closure becomes a complaint). The handover scores 7, the retention offer scores 5 because offers are built from general conditions, and setup scores 5, since every action is a flow your admins build first.

Who's using Zendesk AI agents for account closures?

Lush and Vagaro are published Zendesk customers. Neither of their stories covers account actions such as a closure.

What does Zendesk AI agents cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Zendesk's pricing page says AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan and billed per automated resolution, which it defines as a request the AI agent resolved without escalating to a person. So you pay for each closure the AI finishes and nothing for the ones it hands over, on top of your Suite seats. Cost scores 5, because the bill grows with every closure the AI finishes.
✅
Choose Zendesk AI agents for account closures if:
  • You want AI from the same vendor as your helpdesk, on one contract.
  • You want to pay when the AI resolves a request, and nothing when it hands over.
  • Your site or app already signs customers in before they chat.
❌
Don't choose Zendesk AI agents for account closures if:
  • You want the AI to run an identity check inside the conversation.
  • You want a cost per closure request that stays the same whether the AI finishes it or hands it over.

Can Decagon automate account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: Decagon treats identity verification as a controlled operation, authenticates callers by voice and transfers calls with a summary, covering 3 of the 6 closure jobs fully and 3 in part. It's built with Decagon's team, and Decagon says most customers pay per conversation.
Decagon is an enterprise AI agent for chat, email and voice, with financial services among its main industries. Its integrations page includes Zendesk, Intercom and Salesforce, and Decagon's team builds the agent with you.

How does Decagon handle an account closure end to end?

Decagon's product overview promises that "critical operations like identity verification and refunds are executed securely, reliably, and on-brand with strict controls," and its security page describes authenticating customers over voice. That earns a 7 on checking who is asking, since neither page shows what happens when a check fails. Its trust center lists PCI DSS, the security standard for handling card data, which a bank's security reviewer will look for.
Its financial services page covers balance inquiries and other secure account requests (7). Decagon's product pages show no retention step or account-closing action, so the offer scores 4. Settling and closing score 6 each, on the strength of controlled refunds and the reasoning trace in its operating procedures.
Decagon's voice product transfers calls to a person "with a concise summary," so hard cases score 8. Setup scores 4, since the agent is built with Decagon's team before it goes live.

Who's using Decagon for account closures?

Chime, a US fintech, uses Decagon across chat and voice. Its story is about support at scale, with no closure-specific detail.

What does Decagon cost at 1,000 closure requests a month?

Decagon's site sends buyers to a demo request. Its post on pricing AI agents says "The vast majority of our customers choose per-conversation pricing," and third-party contract data puts the median contract value at $432,750. Cost scores 2, because none of these pages gives a rate to budget a 1,000-closure month from.
✅
Choose Decagon for account closures if:
  • You're an enterprise bank or fintech whose closure requests often come by phone.
  • You need a vendor with PCI DSS on its trust center.
  • You want the vendor's team to build the agent with you.
❌
Don't choose Decagon for account closures if:
  • You want to see a price before you book a demo.
  • You want a retention step you can see and change yourself.

What does automating account closures save you? (worked example)

⚡
TL;DR: Handling 1,000 closure requests a month by hand costs about $2,000 in team time. My AskAI comes to about $487 on Pro and Intercom Fin to $990, while Fini shows no plan fee, so its total needs a sales quote.
I've assumed 1,000 closure requests a month, 60% by chat and 40% by email, and five minutes of team time per closure at a loaded cost of $0.40 a minute. Five minutes assumes your team already uses AI to look up the account and draft the reply, a little under the six-minute average handle time often quoted for support. The median wage for customer service representatives is $21.53 an hour, so $0.40 a minute allows for overheads.

Against the no-AI row, My AskAI saves about $1,513 a month and Intercom Fin about $1,010. Both figures assume the AI finishes every closure, so the saving comes down by the team time spent on the requests you hand over, such as disputes, bereavements and customers in financial difficulty. Fini shows no plan fee, so it can't be set against the no-AI row; ask for a quote if its fintech controls decide the purchase.
Cost of 1,000 closure requests a month: no AI costs $2,000 ($2.00 each); My AskAI on Pro costs about $487 (about $0.49 each), a saving of about $1,513 a month.
Cost of 1,000 closure requests a month: no AI costs $2,000 ($2.00 each); My AskAI on Pro costs about $487 (about $0.49 each), a saving of about $1,513 a month.
Per-outcome and per-resolution bills rise with every closure the AI finishes, and Sierra's can also rise with every customer its agent talks out of closing. Our Task steps and Tools are billed on top of credits on every plan, so our figure includes the Task steps.

So which AI customer service agent is best for automating account closures?

⚡
TL;DR: My AskAI is my pick for most support teams, with Intercom Fin the runner-up for teams that want a teammate's sign-off on every closure. Ada is the wildcard for banks that want the clearest documented sign-in check.
My AskAI tops the scoreboard with 60 on the strength of settling what's owed and handing hard cases to a person. It does that inside the helpdesk your team already works in, at about $487 a month for 1,000 closure requests. Our identity checks beyond your helpdesk's verification are Task steps you write, so build them around the sign-in or code your customers already use.
Intercom Fin, second on 57, suits a team that wants a teammate to sign off every closure. Fini costs far more for its identity checks and account actions. Ada has the clearest sign-in check in the set. If closures are a small share of your tickets, I'd keep them with your team for now and let the AI handle the account lookups.
Whichever tool you choose, roll closures out in stages:
  1. Start with drafts - the AI drafts every closure reply and proposed action as an internal note for your team to check before any customer sees it.
  1. Let it finish the simplest closures first - accounts with no balance owed and no dispute.
  1. Keep offers and money on approval - retention offers, refunds and final payments wait for a teammate until you trust them.
  1. Keep hard cases with people - disputes, bereavements and customers in financial difficulty always go to your team.
If you want to try this on real closure requests, our Tasks and Tools page shows how a closure Task is put together. The 30-day free trial gives you every feature with no card.

FAQs

What is an account closure?
An account closure is a customer ending their relationship with a business for good, such as closing a bank account, ending a phone contract or deleting a software account. It's different from a downgrade or a pause. For a support team, a closure request usually needs an identity check, a final bill or refund, the close itself and a confirmation of what happens next.
For a bank receiving account closure emails, which AI assistants can authenticate users?
In this set, Ada documents a sign-in step with a failure path, Fini a step-up identity check before sensitive actions, Intercom Fin an emailed one-time code, and Decagon and Sierra identity verification built with their teams. We share account details with customers your helpdesk has verified, such as an email sender, and you add any further checks as Task steps. For email closures, add a code or a sign-in link so the check happens before any account detail is shared. Our roundup of AI for banks covers the rest of a bank's support.
Which AI customer service agents can handle account closure requests for telecom providers?
Sierra has the clearest published telecom proof, with customers such as Singtel and a telecom page that lists cancellation requests among its jobs. Decagon and Ada both handle voice, which suits telecom closures that arrive by phone. For telecom closures by chat or email in Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Freshchat, Gorgias or HubSpot, My AskAI can read the contract end date and device balance from your billing system and explain the final bill.
Can an AI agent make a retention offer without discounting outside policy?
Yes, as long as the offer is a rule you set. In My AskAI, we put the offer in the closure Task as a step you write, so the AI makes it once and then closes the account if the customer still says no. Sierra's agent can make a personalized save offer, and Fin's cancel-or-pause template gives you a starting point.
Which account closure requests should always go to a person?
Set a topic rule so these go straight to your team, with a summary of the conversation so far:
  • disputes about the final bill
  • closures after a bereavement
  • customers in financial difficulty
  • requests where the identity check fails
Any customer who asks for a person should reach one too.
How is the closure confirmation and data deletion step handled?
The AI should confirm the close once it has happened in your system, then tell the customer what comes next, such as a final bill or refund date and statements to download first. For data, follow your published policy: one large platform keeps a reopen window before it deletes data, and another makes a closed account impossible to restore. Put your policy into the AI's instructions in plain words (any reopen window, when data is deleted, what can't be restored) so it gives customers the right answer.
How long does account closure take?
The conversation can be finished in one go when the AI can check identity, read the account and close it in your system. The close itself depends on your rules: a large US bank closes most accounts immediately once the balance is zero or positive and pending items have posted. US consumer finance guidance says state law generally requires a reasonable amount of time. Where the close needs a person, the AI should tell the customer when to expect confirmation.
