"AI is steering us toward a barren future" — cue some technology hypocrisy.

This is such a sad and misplaced view of generative AI from Procreate — a prominent digital art app. A technology company of all people. This company has made their position clear: they don't like AI and will not add it into their products, ever. Why?

  1. They believe AI is built on theft.
      • But isn't most creativity standing on the shoulders of the giants before us? Using what's been created to inspire us to create what's next. Most art, music, and cinema can be traced back to something very similar that's been created before it.
  1. They believe AI is a threat to human creativity.
      • AI, like the iPad, is a tool. It can be used a little or a lot to help someone create something — music, art, poetry, or code. Do they think CGI is not creative in the film industry? Are digital art tools not a threat to drawing and painting? Is there not a hypocrisy here?

Procreate state is their mission that "the launch of the iPad was the spark." Obviously, generative AI for art and the iPad are two different things. But it's easy to think they're very different. They are tools at the end of the day. Is an artist that paints on their iPad with an undo button less worthy than an artist who paints with a brush? Surely, Procreate would think so. Their artists can use some technology, but not all. And then an artist who uses generative AI to help them in creating something is no longer an artist? They're no longer being creative? These are just double standards masked in some antiquated principles.
